Aretha Franklin proclaimed the wisdom of a truth of which we are all aware.
Even the Beatitudes sang “I get by with a little help from my friends.”
In Jewish Wisdom Literature (Eccl 4:12) a wise person wrote “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Salman Rushdie wrote “In the cookie of life, friends are chocolate chips.”
Whatever the source or the tradition, friends matter.
While we are born with our family, we choose our friends. Euripides wrote “One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives.”
While some of the above quotes involve human friendship, in Christian literature a new dimension emerges when Jesus says in John 15:15 “I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
A human divine/divine friendship surpasses all else.
